SENIOR NIGHT · FROM THE PEOPLE IN THE STANDS

Senior night gifts from parents (that they’ll actually keep)

Senior night gifts fall into two piles: the thing you hand them on the field, and the thing that is still around in ten years. Below are ideas for both, with prices where we checked them, including plenty we do not sell and one we do.

What senior night is, and what parents actually buy

Senior night is the home game where a school honors its 12th-graders. Parents walk out with their athlete, someone reads a short bio, and there are usually flowers, a photo, and a table of gifts near the door.

“Senior” here means a high school senior, usually 17 or 18. Search engines keep mixing this occasion up with gifts for retirees, so if you have been getting recliner catalogs, that is why.

Two kinds of things get bought: something for the walk-out, which is photographed and then mostly gone by the weekend, and something for later, which sits on a shelf or in a box for years. Most of the list below is the first kind. A few items are the second kind. Budgets vary a lot by school, from a few dollars to a few hundred.

Senior night gifts from parents, with what they cost

Where a row shows a price, it is the seller’s listed price on the date shown, not a quote; small sellers change prices often, so check before you buy. Rows without a price are ideas whose cost depends entirely on where you buy.

A note on the first three rows: we make the card in row 1. Rows 2 and 3 are other companies that make a similar thing, with their prices as listed. Snapshot’s single card costs less than ours, so if price is the deciding factor, look there too.

Senior night gifts for guys

This is the variant people search most and find least. Half the results are about retirement gifts, and the other half are gift baskets, which plenty of 18-year-olds unwrap once and then leave in the car.

What tends to survive is one object with their number or their name on it: a signed ball, a framed game photo, a jersey in a frame, a card. Things that go on a shelf without anyone having to decide where to put them.

If you want it to be about the season rather than about graduation, put the season on it, meaning the team, the year and the number, and leave the college and the future out of it. That part gets its own gift in May.

You were assigned a senior (and gifts for senior teammates)

Plenty of teams pair each junior with a senior, or ask each family to bring one gift for one senior. You usually get a name, a jersey number, and about a week.

Getting a photo. Ask the senior’s parent directly; most will be glad you asked. Failing that, ask before you use one from the team album or a photo they posted themselves. Do not screenshot a stranger’s account.

What to give. One personal thing beats a basket: their number, their name, their grad year, one photo. If you are giving a card, the minimum order is one, so one senior is one order and you are not stuck buying a pack you do not need. More on that in ordering a single custom trading card.

What we cannot do yet. We do not have a way to order one card each for a whole senior class in a single order. Today every card is ordered separately. If you are organizing the whole class, the honest options are to have each family order its own, or to use a seller that already handles class orders, like the one in row 3 of the table.

Senior night gift ideas by sport

Ceremony timing varies by school and state; these are the usual patterns, with a photo tip for each, because the photo decides how the card turns out.

  • Football: usually the fall, at one of the last home games. Helmet off in the photo, or nobody can tell which one is yours.
  • Volleyball: usually fall. Gym light is dim and orange, so a phone photo from the stands will be soft. Ask another parent for one taken from the floor.
  • Soccer: fall or spring, depending on the program. Sideline action photos work well because the background is a uniform green.
  • Cheer: usually tied to the football or basketball ceremony. Stunt photos are the ones they keep.
  • Basketball and wrestling: winter. A photo from the baseline beats one from row 12, and the handshake at the end of a match reads well.
  • Baseball and softball: spring. The easiest sport to photograph: daylight, a clean background and a predictable moment. See making a baseball card from a photo.
  • Track and field: spring. Field-event photos beat running photos, because a runner at a distance is a small figure.
  • Dance team: often winter. A rehearsal photo in daylight often looks better than one under stage lights.

Need it by Friday?

If the ceremony is this week, the printed card is not the answer. We don’t guarantee a delivery date, and we are not going to guess at one for you.

What works this week: the HD file on its own is $9.99. You build the card, see the preview free before you pay, and download a 2250 x 3150 pixel PNG of the front once payment is confirmed. Put it on a phone or send it to the family group chat. The printed card is a separate order you can place whenever you like, including after the ceremony.

What to write on it

The back carries their name, number, team and season, plus one line you write, up to 80 characters. There is no stats table. Eighty characters is about one short sentence, and it is a hard limit, so draft it before you get to the form.

Lines that work, each under 80 characters:

  • the season in their words: “Four years, one number, zero regrets.”
  • a thing only your family would say: “Still the one who slept in her cleats.”
  • the record that mattered to them: “Started every game since freshman year.” (Only if it is true.)
  • plain gratitude: “We watched every minute of it. Thank you.”

What to avoid: their college unless they have actually signed, anything that reads as a goodbye, and inside jokes that need the story attached. If you want more room than 80 characters, write a letter and give it with the card. The letter is the part they keep.

What the card is, and what it is not

It is one 2.5 x 3.5 inch card, printed on both sides, made from a photo off your phone. The background comes off automatically; if you like the original background you can keep it. You see the finished card free, in your browser, before you pay for anything, and you do not need an account.

The shine is printed foil-style artwork, not physical foil or holographic material. There is no stats table on the back, no way yet to order different cards for a whole class in one order, and we ship to US addresses only.

Questions parents ask

What is a good senior night gift from parents?

Most parents give something for the walk-out and something to keep. Flowers work on the field; a framed photo, a letter, or a custom trading card of their last season is what lasts. A RookieSzn card is $24.99 plus $6.95 shipping, with the HD file included.

What do you give a senior you were assigned?

One personal thing beats a big basket. Ask the senior’s parent for a photo, then give a keepsake with their name, number and grad year on it. A RookieSzn card has no minimum order, so one senior is one order.

What are good senior night gifts for guys?

Usually one object rather than a basket: a signed ball, a framed jersey, or a card with their number on it. Senior here means a 12th-grader, not a retiree, so ignore results about retirement gifts.

Senior night is Friday. What can I still get?

Buy the digital file now and hand over the printed card later. The HD file alone is $9.99, with a free preview before you pay and no account needed. The printed card is a separate order you can place whenever you are ready.

Can you make cards for the whole senior class?

Not in one order today. Each card is ordered on its own, with up to 10 copies of the same card. For a whole class, each family can order its own, or a seller that handles class orders may suit you better.
